God’s Handiwork

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10

Everything begins with God. “In the beginning, God...” we read in Genesis 1. God's great love for us and his rich mercy have made us alive with Christ, Paul says in our text. God is Creator and re-Creator. Everything is from the Creator’s grace, expressed to us through creation, scripture, and most amazingly, through Jesus Christ. Through this grace our Creator invites us to be sub-creators.

We are God’s “handiwork,” we are expressions of creativity. As we are created in God's image, let everything we do and say be done with the beauty, creativity, imagination, and joy we see in God our Heavenly Father.

The writing of my recently published book Fullness of Time was a discipline of creativity. The writing and drawing together the poems, artwork, affirmations and anecdotes was a bit of work, but it brought me pleasure. When we create it generates a triad of blessing - to others, to ourselves and to our Creator God.

We may point to our favourite artists, authors, architects, and musicians and say, “They are truly creative.” And yet, Ephesians 2:10 is telling us that we are created in Christ Jesus to do good works.

The way we speak and the way we live are all to display God’s creativity.

Be creative. Be imaginative.
